Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless SteelI am a recently disabled adult that cannot get enough of a good cup of tea. So seeing this I thought it would make a nice birthday present for me, and make life a little easier around the kitchen. It performs as it says it will.

It looks bulky but is surprisingly lightweight and easy to handle. The whole unit spins on a lazy-susan device making it east to direct the steam vent away from kitchen surfaces.

You will need a water pitcher of some kind to fill this easily.I have a medium sized one sand simply filly the pitcher twice to fill this device once. The handle on top, removable lid, and notched corner makes emptying and cleaning a breeze.

The temperature features are splendid and accurate, there are three:
205for noodles/ramen etc, herbal infusions, or pu-er.
195for most black teas. Darjeeling or delicate blacks like Illam valley are at this temperature as well, let the water sit a few minutes in the pot if you have a very delicate tea.
175for green or white teas.A few of the more delicate whites fill thetea pot first, then add the leaves. By filling your teapot dry first, this allows the water to lose 5-10F by just warming the pot. Often enough to make a better flavored tea.

On a given day I can go from pu-er tsocha right from boiling, and set the temp to 195.Make a pot of bold assam in the afternoon, set the temp to 175. Now, after dinner it is set for making jasmine tea for dessert. All with a minimal energy usage and cost.

I have found it a good idea to refill it 1-2 times then empty the remains, give it a brush inside with a towel, and then let it completely dry.My scale buildup was reduced quite a bit this way.

For a fully able person this unit -is- a bit of a luxury.A simple electric teapot with temperature control would do you just fine for a fraction of the initial cost. This will make cost up over time by the thermos nature though, just a fyi.

Have a chain tea drinker in your life though or thoughts for limited commercial use (like a small teahouse), or like tea but have a very full life and time schedule? This would make a great gift for you or even a small splurge to treat yourself.

Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice CookerIt's easy to clean and sure looks great on your countertop!
Positive feedback stops here.

I made a mess out of cooking rice (all the negative reviews are true) until I figured that I should use slightly less water than the recommended quantity. After that, I spent 1 year using it nonstop (we eat rice every day).

365 days later, the non-stick bowl is BADLY chipped, like little bubbles that burst on the bottom and left pinhead-sized chips. I swear that I never used anything else than the included plastic scoop (and sponge for cleaning) and never ever scratched it, so I'm 100% sure the non-stick coating quality is to blame.

Add to that that non-stick coating is toxic*, this baby is out of my kitchen as soon as I can afford a Zojirushi. They're not as elegants, but they last forever. For more info on teflon toxicity, visit http://www.ewg.org

Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker Review

Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow CookerNot normally one to write reviews, this is one time I felt compelled to put my two cents in. I thoroughly researched slow cookers and rice makers before deciding on the Sanyo ECJ-HC100S. I must say that this cooker is the smartest thing I've purchased in a very long time -- a great concept, nicely designed and very well made. It is incredibly easy to use and the heavy duty, non-stick bowls (not one, but two!) and lids are easy to clean. It's sleek and good-looking as well as nice and compact, considering its large capacity -- not bulky or cumbersome like most of the crockpot-type slow cookers out there. And what's better than having two products in one?!

The first thing I used it for was brown basmati rice, which I have never been able to successfully cook on the stovetop. I couldn't have been happier with the result; it was cooked to perfection as was every other type of rice that I've made since then. Just use the cup provided to measure out the rice and then add water to the appropriate line shown inside the bowl and you can't go wrong. Even porridge and steelcut oats come out perfect every time.

For me, the drawback to crockery cooking has always been the need to brown meat in a seperate pan on the stovetop. However, the Sanyo slow cooking bowl is metal with a non-stick interior and has both a high and low setting for slow cooking. Therefore, you can start out using the high setting to brown the meat and then add the rest of your ingredients and switch to low for the rest of the cooking process. A beautiful thing!

So far this item is worth every penny I paid for it. I found the best price online at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Sweeter yet, because I placed my order in person at my local BB&B store, they even accepted my store coupon for 20% off!

Hats off to Sanyo for a great product all around!

Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless Steel Lunch Jar Review

Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless Steel Lunch JarIt's a great "lunchbox" if you adapt your menu to it.

First the description
The lunchbox is a Thermos Jar with a non-insulated plastic top. There are four containers that fit into the jar in a specific order.
-The bottom container is a insulated bowl. It has a gasket sealed screw on top, insulated side walls and a small vent for pressure. The most insulative of the bunch it is designed for soup or other liquids
-The next container is the biggest. It has a slide and lock insulated top.
-The third container is notably smaller and has a Tupperware like pop top.
-The fourth container is smaller yet and has the same top.
You stack the containers in the jar and then clip the top on with little side clips. The whole thing then goes in a nice nylon carry bag that also has a pair of chopsticks in a narrow plastic box. There are little pockets on the side for extra sauce packets or condiments (or I-pod video's to watch while your eating lunch).

This unit is optimally designed for the Japanese style lunch. A soup, Rice, entrée and pickled/salted vegetables. Normally you'd put your soup in the bottom container, fill the middle container up with rice. Your entrée would go in the third and the veggies in the fourth. Since the soup and the rice container both have insulated tops they stay warm. The other containers are not insulated and neither is the top. This allows some heat coming off the bottom two containers to escape so that your veggies are at room temperature. Understanding this is important. Its not supposed to keep the entire meal at the same temperature. Its supposed to keep one part hot and the other part at room temperature.

I've found that in real use the soup container stays steaming hot. The stuff in the rice container stays warm (but not hot) the stuff in the top two containers heats up to room temperature, maybe a little bit more.

Naturally you don't have to use it as designed (soup/rice/entrée/veggie) but departures require a little bit adaptation and creativity. You need to balance both amounts and what you want to keep the hottest vs coolest. Also if you have access to a microwave at lunch it kind of makes this not quite as useful since you could just heat your food up there (as opposed to heating it up in the morning before you go). You could use the whole thing as a cooler (everything remains cold/cool till you heat up what you want). That might be a better way to go if your using it for the office.

The size of the room temperature containers is not large enough to handle American sized sandwiches and breads, so if your looking to take that traditional lunch box stuff this isn't the best unit for that.

If your looking to make the most of this unit you might check out some Bento Box cookbooks. They give receipies and menu sets more in line with what this is designed to handle. In particular I enjoyed the book "Bento Boxes" by Naomi Kijima

Bento Boxes: Japanese Meals on the Go

I'll cook something up out of that and thrown in a packet of instant miso soup for a Japanese style lunch.

Pros-
Compact and efficient use of space- It all goes in the tube, no bag full of different containers
Allows for two temperatures in the same container - Allows for flexible combinations
Lots of interesting comments from your co-workers

Cons-
Cleanup is a bit of a pain - Not dishwasher safe. The soup top is a little tricky at times.
Soft plastic will eventually pick up strong smells/Stains
Two temperatures in the same container - Requires a little creativity, doesn't keep everything uniformly hot/cold.

Conclusion-
As long as you understand how it works and adapt it's a great product. Might encourage you to cook a bit more healthy food and eat more vegetables.

Zojirushi EF-VSC40 1300-Watt Electric Gourmet Roaster Review

Zojirushi EF-VSC40 1300-Watt Electric Gourmet RoasterI just ordered my 2nd zojirushi fish roaster today. The first one I had quit working after about 11 months of constant use - I used it to roast Pike Mackerel, Steaks, vegetables, salmon, etc. For the amount that I used it, Im not too angered or surprised that it broke, but I wish it would last a little longer.

The roaster is awesome at cooking steaks and fish - and it gets done VERY quickly. Somewhere around 10-15 minutes from a raw fish, all the way to it being nicely cooked, same with steaks.

When I first bought the unit, there was very little smoke, just a faint smell of fish or steak, and I was very pleased. I probably used this everyday, or every other day for 11 months, and towards the end of the 11 months, it started getting really smokey in the house ( I dont know if the filter was failing, or if it was just all the oil on the heating elements), and I had to start taking the roaster outside - I live in a small apartment so its not a big deal, as I have a patio that is very close to the kitchen. And at the end of the 11 months, when I was cooking a steak, I realized that the top heating element just quit working... for 120 bucks, and the amount I used it, Im not happy that I have to buy another one, but I cant say I didnt get my money's worth.

Here are some annoyances that I found using this thing:

1) The bottome reflector tray needs to be covered by tinfoil or something because the oil that drips on the reflector tray is near impossible to get off, and you will ruin a sponge trying to clean it

2) The water you need to put in the bottom of the unit after a while will discolor the bottom. I left water in there overnight once ( I forgot to clean it) and I had some rust at the bottom - not too big of a deal, but it makes the unit unsightly on the inside.

3) the Unit gets SUPER hot, so dont place anything on top of it or touch it during the cooking process - Its common sense I know, but one of my buddies burned himself by touching it. Hes not the fastest fish in the pack, so maybe that was to be expected, but its something you should be aware of.

4) The grill inside is not very adjustable, and it gets a lot of burnt charcoal stuck to it. Had to buy a special sponge ethat gets the charcoal off. not a big deal, but still a very slight annoyance. i can deal with it. Here are the good things:

1) You can plop a steak in there, or some tomatoes, fish, whatever, and it becomes nicely grilled. does what its meant to do, quite quickly.

2) makes me not have to use the stove or the oven - BIG PLUS.

3) relatively small footprint for what it does.

Tiger America 3 c. Elec Rice Cooker/Food Ste ( JNP-0550 ) Review

Tiger America 3 c. Elec Rice Cooker/Food SteI've had this rice cooker for 9 years now and have used it at least weekly for that long.I also will leave it on for days with the rice warming. It's durable, dependable.I have also cooked other things in it- leave wild rice in for at least 30 mins after the warming light is on- also have cooked wheatberries and quinoa without any problems.Very easy.Gets a little gummy with the steam drain, but that happens on all of them.Very easy to clean. After 9 years, the inside pot is a little scratched, but rice doesn't stick- I have to say on occasion I used metal utensils and this is where the scratches came from.

I also like that it has 1 button only. You don't have to keep on pulling out a user manual or worry about an lcd screen.

The size is good too- for maybe up to 4-6 people.

Sanyo ECJ-PX50S 5-Cup Micro-Computerized Pressure Rice Cooker and Steamer Review

Sanyo ECJ-PX50S 5-Cup Micro-Computerized Pressure Rice Cooker and SteamerThe Sanyo ECJ-PX50S 5-Cup Micro-Computerized Pressure Rice Cooker and Steamer is simply the most exquisite rice cooker that you can imagine. I looked long and hard and did much research before my purchase.I almost purchased the Zojirushi because of all the hype.I was told by friends in the know that I had to have a Zojirushi to experience great rice. But tests, user reviews and the specs of the Sanyo kept pulling me back.

Okay, I purchased it a month ago and was immediately impressed with the overall quality. This was my second 5 quart cooker as my last one, a Wolfgang Puck from QVC started burning the rice after five years.I thought I was happy with the Puck; that is until I got perfect rice from the Sanyo. No matter what you think, read, see or envision, you have not tasted great rice until you have rice from this cooker. But there is a catch.

The catch is to never believe ANYONE, including me, when they use the term, "perfect rice."What that really means is perfect rice to them; their individual palette and desired texture of the finished product.I learned by dining with dozens of friends, that what they think is great rice ranges from terrible - to - excellent and many shades in between. The recipe book provided will give you a middle-of-the-road idea for making basically "good" rice, but to use this cooker requires a bit of patience and willingness to experiment.Let me give you my approach and I hope it works for you.

Make your first rice using the method outlined in the booklet.Use their measuring cup as well as the calibration lines on the inside of the bowl, etc.Taste the rice and write down in your notebook a line or two about the rice.Next try manipulation of the basic recipe by changing the texture to FIRM, SOFT, or REGULAR to see which works best. Then try using a ¼ cup less or more water and repeat the variations again remembering to always make notes on the results of each batch. This will help you to adjust the recipe for your particular taste.I made a batch-a-day for two weeks until I got the magic "perfect" and it's been "perfect" for me ever since.

The rice this cooker makes is so wonderful that sometimes I eat it by the bowl with nothing else. There is one thing that you must do if you're going to invest in a professional appliance like the Sanyo Pressure Rice Cooker; you must use a better rice than most Americans buy at their supermarket.I can tell you that you will never get great rice from some generic North Carolina or Texas rice. Much of this rice is starchy and already old upon delivery to your store. The quality of rice they make is just barely better than cattle feed grain. The cooked grains often are rock hard in the middle yet soft on the outside.Sometimes these cheaper rice grains are sticky, crumbly and unpalatable. If you going to use a $200 rice cooker, learn about Basmati, Jasmine and Arborio rice. There is a Texas based rice called Jasmati; stay away from it; it's not true Jasmine nor true Basmati, but is an anomalous domestic hybridmarketed to lovers of aromatic rice like Indonesian Jasmine or Himalayan Basmati rice.Learn about par-boiled rice versus short grain generics.Study the subtle differences between brown rice and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, I repeat, NEVER use those instant rice concoctions designed for the microwave like Success rice in your cooker.

PROS:Easy cleanup, well designed, durable, incredible titanium inner pot, retractable cord, super accurate always on clock display, nice spatula cradle.

CONS: I can't afford to buy two just in case something happens to this one. I never want to be without this rice cooker. In other words; no cons.

Conclusions: I went to my local upscale kitchenware shop after I purchased this one. I saw all the models displayed side-by-side; the Sanyo was so much nicer than all the others including the Zojirushi as to be scarcely believable. If you love rice and have the time to learn how to make your "perfect" rice, this is the rice cooker for you. Again, if you don't experiment and put in the time, you'll get "good" rice every time, but you won't get "perfect" rice until you perfect your technique.

Panasonic SRG06FG 3.3-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker Review

Panasonic SRG06FG 3.3-Cup Automatic Rice CookerThis is a really great, basic rice cooker. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the more expensive rice cookers (no warming feature, no different settings, etc.), but it works well for cooking rice, it's compact, and reasonably priced. Prior to buying this one, we had another basic model made by another company that broke. We replaced with an identical one, and it broke as well. After going through two rice cookers, we decided to pay $5 more to get a different brand- this Panasonic. We have had no problems with it, and we also like the non-stick pot. With our old rice cooker, the rice would stick to the bottom of the pot, so we couldn't eat all of it. The Panasonic doesn't have this problem, so we can make smaller quantities of rice without wasting most of it. I have made white rice, brown rice, and quinoa in the rice cooker, and all have turned out well.

Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Cool-Touch Rice Cooker and Food Steamer Review

Aroma ARC-838TC 8-Cup Digital Cool-Touch Rice Cooker and Food SteamerThis is the fourth rice cooker I have owned and it is by far and away the best. The rice cooks right every time. The manual does give a guide of how much water to add for different types of rice but I have found that even when I screw up and do not use the right amount of water the rice has turned out pretty good.

I enjoy the fact that the device has a sealed top which really seems to help the rice be more consistent and also makes me feel better having this unit used with three small children in the house running around. The rice receptacle inside is a delightful non-stick surface that is more then easy to clean. The steam feature for other items works wonderful as well.I have left rice in the device for over two hours after cooking and it is still moist, tasty and not burnt. The one touch button cooking is a breeze and for me it takes about 30 minutes or so in most instances for the quantity I cook.

The only thing I learned I had to do is not place the device under anything when cooking. There is a starchy steam that is released during cooking that can coat wood and other surfaces. On wood this starch coating can be a pain to remove.

This is a great device to cook an entire meal or side in quick mindless ease.I can't think of a feature I would change on this unit.A great device that actually has increased the amount of rice and vegetables I and my family consume.Unless you need larger quantities of rice then this device is capable of I really can't see why anyone would need anything else. This is a great product at a great price.Wonderful!

Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, White Review

Sanyo ECJ-HC55S 5-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker, WhitePurchased this rice cooker for my wife. We are both enjoying it a lot. The parts are solid and simply feel like high quality. There are two bowls. The rice cooking bowl has a better non-stick coating on it. The other bowl for non-rice cooking is easy enough to clean, but might take a little soaking for those challenging situations.

Selection is easy to understand. The slow-cook options are partially what sold me on this unit. You can cook so many things in this cooker, because you can manually cook instead of always having to follow a programmed option.

Rice can be kept warm up to 12 hours. It has a great sealing system, so it does stay fresh.

The unit looks very nice on the counter. The battery runs the clock, unless you keep the unit plugged into the outlet. The battery is suppose to run for 4 years or so.

Quality of rice cooked -- The rice has been PERFECT every time we have cooked rice. We are using a Jasmine rice bought from a local asian market. We simply wash the rice twice, put in the required amount of water, and set it to cook. So far it has been perfect each time.

I ended up buying this over the Zojirushi based on price and couldn't be happier. I saved maybe a $100 and am 100% happy with the product. We've been using this for 3 weeks now.

Cleaning is easy and fast. The removable lid/seal is great and easy to clean. It is not possible to latch the cover if the removable cover is not in place -- a nice feature and great engineering.

The steam collector works well. Be careful not to put your hand close to the exit hole as steam is not fully condensed coming out and could burn you. This is not really a safety concern for me and my wife. Cleaning the collector is not a problem so far. Simply remove and shake out the water. Any water dripping down is caught in a silicon seal. You can easily take a towl and soak up the very small amount of water that might drip out. It is only water and doesn't mess anything up.

I would buy this over again based on my experience so far. Can't speak about reliability yet. I can only hope Sanyo brand will be good. I don't usually buy their products.

Oster 4722 3-Cups Uncooked/6-Cup Cooked Rice Cooker with Steaming Tray, Red Review

Oster 4722 3-Cups Uncooked/6-Cup Cooked Rice Cooker with Steaming Tray, RedI've never owned a rice cooker before this, however, I have cooked lots of rice over the years. Its an inexpensive rice cooker and if you follow the directions, it'll do fine.

Since moving to the mountains of Colorado, its taken me years to adjust to the lowered the boiling point due to the higher elevation (8300')... it takes more time (add ~10-20min) and the dry climate means using more water (for a 1 cup of dry rice, takes ~2.5+ cups water rather than 2cups). Still, there have been many times when rice just didn't work out the way I wanted.

So I mentioned that it would be nice to have a rice cooker and let it deal with the cook time. Of course I had done some research, and when this came in the mail as a present, I was a little nervous since Oster's seem to get so-so reviews. Well, I cooked my typical basmati rice, a 1/2 cup dry and added my typical 1c water plus extra, put lid on, pressed the button and went to do something else.

A lot of reviewers mention how the rice on the bottom gets over-cooked, sometimes brown or burnt. Some reviewers like the crunchiness, some hate it. Well, the directions tell you to stir the rice - especially the bottom of the cooker after 15 minutes. Sure enough, the rice at the bottom was starting to stick. I scraped it all loose, added another 1/4 cup water, chopped it up a little, put the lid on, and let fate take its course. Would the rice by a burnt mess? 20 minutes later we had the best sticky rice we've ever had!

Plus it seemed to cook faster. And I really liked that it went to 'warm' mode automatically. One major drawback: It spewed hot sticky water up under the lid and through the vent all over the kitchen but once we wiped the lid off (without picking up the lid), it settled down. If you are a neat freak or want a set-and-forgot, this rice cooker is not for you. And for me, I'll come up with a little steam catcher helmet and deal with the mess. For the price, its a good buy. And, I love the red color too!

[found this cool tip from Spyce: To help keep the starch from bubbling up and spraying out of the vent hole, rinse the rice thoroughly and drain. Heat a small amount of olive oil in the rice bowl, once the oil is heated, carefully add the rice and saute it for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the water and continue cooking.] I'm going to try this tip next time!

BTW, this cooker seems like a knock-off of the similar Rival rice cooker (both owned by Jarden]

Zojirushi NS-MYC10 Micom Fuzzy Logic 5.5 Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-MYC10 Micom Fuzzy Logic 5.5 Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerI never gave much thouht to cooking rice until I moved to Japan--and acquired a Japanese spouse!

But we're fussy about our rice here, and nobody would dream of being without a rice cooker.Rice cookers are actually pressure cookers, so the rice is always plump and perfect.

I have the equivalent Japanese model (the same but with a different faceplate).I've had it for almost fou years and it's a real workhorse.Zoji is a value-brand here in Japan, specialising in small appiances, and known for being simple and sturdy.I would choose them over some of the big Japanese names, given the quality problems I've had with some of the other well-known electrical brands that make everything from TVs to elevators.

The rice? Can't fault it. Nor can the other half, who's ultra-critical. Makes great oatmeal, too, but I can't get the other half interested in such exotic foreign foods.

Zojirushi NP-KAC18 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System Review

Zojirushi NP-KAC18 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating SystemI don't know why there are no reviews since this model should already be around for a while. We bought one from a local store last August. One week ago it suddenly stopped working with no reason. The power cord did easily come loose and needed to be replugged into the cooker from the beginning of the usage. Now we need to pack this heavy baby and send it to the nearest service center, at our own cost. And I became the unfortunate guy who need a backup rice cooker all the time.

VERY disappointed from this first experience with Zojirushi. Hey, don't become another Toyota!

Zojirushi NS-XBC05YR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Yellow Review

Zojirushi NS-XBC05YR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, YellowI've had this product for a couple of weeks and have used it with several different types of rice. All came out perfectly in the sticky style. The liquid volume of the bowl is about 1,200 ML.The 3 cups description are the smaller in size Japanese cups.If you eat more rice at one meal, have a large family, this is not the product for you.

There are several things that you can't cook in this appliance including soups, sauces and a full 3 cup quantity of rice (it will boil over and make a terrible mess).

You can use it to steam foods with a very good result on vegetables.

The instruction book is confusing and took some figuring out.

This machine is extremely well insulated and does not heat up my kitchen as my very old rice cooker does. Also it doesn't put gobs of steam into the air.

I look forward to seeing reviews from folks who are more technical than I am, but I am pleased with this machine.

Zojirushi NS-DAC10 Zutto Neuro-Fuzzy 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-DAC10 Zutto Neuro-Fuzzy 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerI think this is a perfectly fine rice cooker, perhaps a bit over-priced, but it IS one of the famous "Made in Japan" rice cookers for which Zojirushi is justly famous.

It differs in one main respect from the excellent ZUTTO NP-DA10 model sold in Japan: that one (which has served me brilliantly for 2 years now) uses the Induction Heating cooking method, which this North American version does not have. I think IH would have justified the price of this; without it, well...

Perfectly fine rice, good design and functionality. And I don't agree with the comments about ZUTTO "bombing out" in Japan or cheap or flimsy plastic. The reviews on Amazon.jp (which you can check) are universally positive. See one in person at your local shop before you decide.

Zojirushi NP-KAC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System Review

Zojirushi NP-KAC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating SystemI use this rice cooker once or twice a day. Everything (brown rice, sushi, steel cut oatmeal, sweet sticky rice, etc) comes out perfectly. I would never be able to cook such perfect rice on the stove. I thought that I made a mistake of not buying 10 cup model, but 2-3 cups is what I end up cooking for a family of 4 (and we have the leftovers). I am so impressed with Zojirushi, would definitely buy their products in the future. The trick is also to buy good quality rice from Asian grocery stores. Love it and don't understand why so many of my non asian friends never use one. At this point this seems like #1 appliance to have. I have to stop my love poem to Zojirushi here :-).

Zojirushi NS-WAC18 Micom Fuzzy-Logic 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-WAC18 Micom Fuzzy-Logic 10-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerI ordered the rice cooker. When I opened the packaging, I found there were a lot of scratches on the bottom of the non-stick coated pan already! It might be caused by the free-moving plastic cups in the pan due to the poor packaging design by the manufacturer. I therefore had some doubts about the quality of the product since their packaging seems cheap and not much thought to it. I decided to return the rice cooker to Amazon. Fortunately Amazon handled the return smoothly.

Zojirushi NS-XAC05XR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Review

Zojirushi NS-XAC05XR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, StainlessThis thing is amazing when it comes to making risotto.I've only had it a short time but have made about a half-dozen batches of risotto and all have been successful beyond expectations except for one batch with peas in it which was a little underdone. The best so far has been risotto con gorgonzolla, but the batches ofrisotto milanese I have made have also been excellent.

However, I'm still working out cooking regular rice in it.The batches I have made so far have been a little sticky but they are getting better (I reduced the water I used). But since I bought it primarily to make risotto I can't complain too much.

Zojirushi NS-PC18 Electric 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-PC18 Electric 10-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerUsing a rice cooker should be easy - otherwise, why plunk down the money for it? This Zojirushi is user-friendly only after some experimentation since the manual contains almost no information about how to use it. However, since I've finally found the right procedure (as I'll share later), I've been pleased with its performance.

First, some background. I have a Zojirushi NHS-10 that worked beautifully from the start, but after a year of use, started spitting and gurgling starchy water all over the counter. With that kind of mess, I was afraid to cook larger amounts of rice, so I bought this model as a replacement. I liked that the top latched and that the vent hole had a shallow well around it to catch expelled water. I had loved the quality of rice that the less expensive model cooked, so I stayed with the same brand.

My first attempt with this model resulted in the same gooey mess as with my old model - and I was furious. After several phone calls to relatives who also owned this model, I discovered that you MUST use the measurements provided by the plastic measuring cup and inside the non-stick pan. (Because I found that the plastic cup is not really a full cup of rice and was used to a one cup rice to two cups water ratio, I had used my own measuring cup.) For every Zojirushi plastic cup measurement, fill to the corresponding water mark inside the pan. Fill the pan with water to the correct level AFTER adding the rice.

Rinse rice twice before cooking if you want to avoid slight browning on the bottom. Allow fifteen minutes after the machine changes from cook to warm for additional steaming and fluffier rice. How do you cook brown rice? Not a clue. Brown rice requires longer cooking time and therefore more water. My old Zojirushi came with a small manual that provided rice/water ratios for several varieties, but this arrived with almost no instruction. I suggest experimenting with brown and wild rice before counting on it for company.

The pan for this model is huge, and you must use at least two cups of dry rice. The size stated on the box is misleading, as two to ten cups refers to uncooked, not cooked, quantities; rice doubles in size when cooked. Although it's not practical for a small family, larger families and frequent rice eaters will appreciate its generous capacity. Cleaning is slightly more complicated (though hardly time-consuming) than with less expensive Zojirushi models since the steam valve at the top should be rinsed free of accumulated starch between uses. (One relative rarely rinses the valve, however, and has no problems.) The non-stick pan cleans easily, although care must be used not to scratch the surface. The cord wraps around the bottom for storage. The unit itself is surprisingly light-weight given its appearance, making it easy to remove from even high cupboards.

I have mixed feelings about this rice cooker, as I prefer the results of the less expensive model. However, the overall design of this cooker, with its latched lid, larger steam hole, and "dew" catcher (to collect condensation when the cooker is left on warm for prolonged periods), is better, especially if you intend to leave the rice on warm for an extended time. The biggest drawback of this model is the lack of instruction for users unfamiliar with rice cookers.

Three stars right out of the box, four stars once you adapt.

Zojirushi NP-HTC10 Induction Heating 5-1/2-Cup Pressure Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NP-HTC10 Induction Heating 5-1/2-Cup Pressure Rice Cooker and Warmer1) Note that better prices can be had offline. I bought this product for $239 at an Asian grocery store and it came with a 20lb bag of rice to boot. I imagine the invoice price is around $200. Someone's making an insane amount of profit selling this for $400+.

2) This rice cooker produces moist, fluffy, chewy, textured rice that exceeds a vast majority of the restaurants out there, including those that cook individual portions of rice in stone pots. It will spoil you and make you a snob when it comes to rice. The menu has different settings for pretty much any kind of rice you want to cook like white (soft, regular, hard), brown, mixed, rinse-free, sushi, porridge, GABA, etc. You can keep the rice warm and tasting fresh for upto 24hr.

3) Good things take time, but this cooker pushes the limit of patience, taking ~50mins for white rice, ~75min for mixed rice, and upto 3.5hr for GABA rice. Fortunately, there's a timer so you can tell it to have rice done by say 6pm, as well as an express mode (25mins) when you are starving. Though still quite good, rice cooked in express mode tends to be slightly firmer and not as impressive as the regular mode. (Minus half star for long cooking time)

4) Compared to the $10 variety I used for a number of years, this one has more parts to clean. The non-stick bowl, the inner lid, and the steam vent needs cleaning after each use as you'd expect. In addition, you need to check if any debris is obstructing any of the sensors, holes, or vents. The air intake and exhaust located on the bottom of the cooker for dissipating heat needs an occasional vacuuming. (Minus half star for extra cleaning required)

5) This unit is rated at ~1230 watts, but that doesn't mean it's using that much electricity continuously like a hair dryer. The cooker turns the heat on and off as needed like an oven to maintain internal temperature and pressure. (Since posting this review, I measured the total electricity consumed by using a Kill A Watt 4460 meter and it came out to 3 cents per use.)

6) Back to the original question, is it worth it? This is really a personal decision based on your budget, utilization, and love for rice. My thought process was I could buy 16 x 20lb bags of rice, or get this rice cooker and enjoy that 1 bag of rice like I never have before. Finding it for $200+ cheaper sweetened the deal too.

Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice CookerThis machine is designed to give baseline service in a rice cooker. It uses a designand technology over 15+ years old.For the amount of money being charged you might want to consider getting a machine that at least has a retractable cord.
On the plus side - the pan heats well and is teflon coated; does white long grain and Japanese medium and short grain very well.
Be aware that the water markings on the interior of the pan correspond to cooking Japanese rice which uses a different ratio of rice to water than other varieties such as, wehani or short grain brown.
This machine has to be played with to do shorter grain varieties of brown. It can handle long grain brown fine.
I would make the suggestion of looking at (all) the rice cookers there and find one that has the following things for the money:
1) stainless steel pan or aluminium pan lined with teflon; 2) retractable cord; 3) warming function;
An on/off switch is NOT standard on an Asian rice cooker. It is due to the fact that in Japan and Australia there is an on/off switch right in the wall plug area. The manufacturers did not take into account that Americans with their different outlet styles would be rice junkies (silly them).
Do not cook anything less than a cup or try for more than 3 cups.Too little rice cooked comes out a bit odd while too much means your pot lid will pop up due to too much steam.
Oh yeah, that's another thing - the lid can make noise due to the steam lifting it during the cooking process (bubbling pot lid kind of stuff). It is not dangerous so don't freak from the noise.
This machine is fine for the dorm or home. But do examine the cost of the machine, the amount of rice you eat and the cost of the machine to features.
This machine is good but it is not great.
