Zojirushi NS-XBC05YR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Yellow Review

Zojirushi NS-XBC05YR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, YellowI've had this product for a couple of weeks and have used it with several different types of rice. All came out perfectly in the sticky style. The liquid volume of the bowl is about 1,200 ML.The 3 cups description are the smaller in size Japanese cups.If you eat more rice at one meal, have a large family, this is not the product for you.

There are several things that you can't cook in this appliance including soups, sauces and a full 3 cup quantity of rice (it will boil over and make a terrible mess).

You can use it to steam foods with a very good result on vegetables.

The instruction book is confusing and took some figuring out.

This machine is extremely well insulated and does not heat up my kitchen as my very old rice cooker does. Also it doesn't put gobs of steam into the air.

I look forward to seeing reviews from folks who are more technical than I am, but I am pleased with this machine.

Zojirushi NS-DAC10 Zutto Neuro-Fuzzy 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-DAC10 Zutto Neuro-Fuzzy 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerI think this is a perfectly fine rice cooker, perhaps a bit over-priced, but it IS one of the famous "Made in Japan" rice cookers for which Zojirushi is justly famous.

It differs in one main respect from the excellent ZUTTO NP-DA10 model sold in Japan: that one (which has served me brilliantly for 2 years now) uses the Induction Heating cooking method, which this North American version does not have. I think IH would have justified the price of this; without it, well...

Perfectly fine rice, good design and functionality. And I don't agree with the comments about ZUTTO "bombing out" in Japan or cheap or flimsy plastic. The reviews on Amazon.jp (which you can check) are universally positive. See one in person at your local shop before you decide.

Zojirushi NP-KAC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating System Review

Zojirushi NP-KAC10 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating SystemI use this rice cooker once or twice a day. Everything (brown rice, sushi, steel cut oatmeal, sweet sticky rice, etc) comes out perfectly. I would never be able to cook such perfect rice on the stove. I thought that I made a mistake of not buying 10 cup model, but 2-3 cups is what I end up cooking for a family of 4 (and we have the leftovers). I am so impressed with Zojirushi, would definitely buy their products in the future. The trick is also to buy good quality rice from Asian grocery stores. Love it and don't understand why so many of my non asian friends never use one. At this point this seems like #1 appliance to have. I have to stop my love poem to Zojirushi here :-).

Zojirushi NS-WAC18 Micom Fuzzy-Logic 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-WAC18 Micom Fuzzy-Logic 10-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerI ordered the rice cooker. When I opened the packaging, I found there were a lot of scratches on the bottom of the non-stick coated pan already! It might be caused by the free-moving plastic cups in the pan due to the poor packaging design by the manufacturer. I therefore had some doubts about the quality of the product since their packaging seems cheap and not much thought to it. I decided to return the rice cooker to Amazon. Fortunately Amazon handled the return smoothly.

Zojirushi NS-XAC05XR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Review

Zojirushi NS-XAC05XR Rizo Micom 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, StainlessThis thing is amazing when it comes to making risotto.I've only had it a short time but have made about a half-dozen batches of risotto and all have been successful beyond expectations except for one batch with peas in it which was a little underdone. The best so far has been risotto con gorgonzolla, but the batches ofrisotto milanese I have made have also been excellent.

However, I'm still working out cooking regular rice in it.The batches I have made so far have been a little sticky but they are getting better (I reduced the water I used). But since I bought it primarily to make risotto I can't complain too much.

Zojirushi NS-PC18 Electric 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-PC18 Electric 10-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerUsing a rice cooker should be easy - otherwise, why plunk down the money for it? This Zojirushi is user-friendly only after some experimentation since the manual contains almost no information about how to use it. However, since I've finally found the right procedure (as I'll share later), I've been pleased with its performance.

First, some background. I have a Zojirushi NHS-10 that worked beautifully from the start, but after a year of use, started spitting and gurgling starchy water all over the counter. With that kind of mess, I was afraid to cook larger amounts of rice, so I bought this model as a replacement. I liked that the top latched and that the vent hole had a shallow well around it to catch expelled water. I had loved the quality of rice that the less expensive model cooked, so I stayed with the same brand.

My first attempt with this model resulted in the same gooey mess as with my old model - and I was furious. After several phone calls to relatives who also owned this model, I discovered that you MUST use the measurements provided by the plastic measuring cup and inside the non-stick pan. (Because I found that the plastic cup is not really a full cup of rice and was used to a one cup rice to two cups water ratio, I had used my own measuring cup.) For every Zojirushi plastic cup measurement, fill to the corresponding water mark inside the pan. Fill the pan with water to the correct level AFTER adding the rice.

Rinse rice twice before cooking if you want to avoid slight browning on the bottom. Allow fifteen minutes after the machine changes from cook to warm for additional steaming and fluffier rice. How do you cook brown rice? Not a clue. Brown rice requires longer cooking time and therefore more water. My old Zojirushi came with a small manual that provided rice/water ratios for several varieties, but this arrived with almost no instruction. I suggest experimenting with brown and wild rice before counting on it for company.

The pan for this model is huge, and you must use at least two cups of dry rice. The size stated on the box is misleading, as two to ten cups refers to uncooked, not cooked, quantities; rice doubles in size when cooked. Although it's not practical for a small family, larger families and frequent rice eaters will appreciate its generous capacity. Cleaning is slightly more complicated (though hardly time-consuming) than with less expensive Zojirushi models since the steam valve at the top should be rinsed free of accumulated starch between uses. (One relative rarely rinses the valve, however, and has no problems.) The non-stick pan cleans easily, although care must be used not to scratch the surface. The cord wraps around the bottom for storage. The unit itself is surprisingly light-weight given its appearance, making it easy to remove from even high cupboards.

I have mixed feelings about this rice cooker, as I prefer the results of the less expensive model. However, the overall design of this cooker, with its latched lid, larger steam hole, and "dew" catcher (to collect condensation when the cooker is left on warm for prolonged periods), is better, especially if you intend to leave the rice on warm for an extended time. The biggest drawback of this model is the lack of instruction for users unfamiliar with rice cookers.

Three stars right out of the box, four stars once you adapt.

Zojirushi NP-HTC10 Induction Heating 5-1/2-Cup Pressure Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NP-HTC10 Induction Heating 5-1/2-Cup Pressure Rice Cooker and Warmer1) Note that better prices can be had offline. I bought this product for $239 at an Asian grocery store and it came with a 20lb bag of rice to boot. I imagine the invoice price is around $200. Someone's making an insane amount of profit selling this for $400+.

2) This rice cooker produces moist, fluffy, chewy, textured rice that exceeds a vast majority of the restaurants out there, including those that cook individual portions of rice in stone pots. It will spoil you and make you a snob when it comes to rice. The menu has different settings for pretty much any kind of rice you want to cook like white (soft, regular, hard), brown, mixed, rinse-free, sushi, porridge, GABA, etc. You can keep the rice warm and tasting fresh for upto 24hr.

3) Good things take time, but this cooker pushes the limit of patience, taking ~50mins for white rice, ~75min for mixed rice, and upto 3.5hr for GABA rice. Fortunately, there's a timer so you can tell it to have rice done by say 6pm, as well as an express mode (25mins) when you are starving. Though still quite good, rice cooked in express mode tends to be slightly firmer and not as impressive as the regular mode. (Minus half star for long cooking time)

4) Compared to the $10 variety I used for a number of years, this one has more parts to clean. The non-stick bowl, the inner lid, and the steam vent needs cleaning after each use as you'd expect. In addition, you need to check if any debris is obstructing any of the sensors, holes, or vents. The air intake and exhaust located on the bottom of the cooker for dissipating heat needs an occasional vacuuming. (Minus half star for extra cleaning required)

5) This unit is rated at ~1230 watts, but that doesn't mean it's using that much electricity continuously like a hair dryer. The cooker turns the heat on and off as needed like an oven to maintain internal temperature and pressure. (Since posting this review, I measured the total electricity consumed by using a Kill A Watt 4460 meter and it came out to 3 cents per use.)

6) Back to the original question, is it worth it? This is really a personal decision based on your budget, utilization, and love for rice. My thought process was I could buy 16 x 20lb bags of rice, or get this rice cooker and enjoy that 1 bag of rice like I never have before. Finding it for $200+ cheaper sweetened the deal too.

Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker Review

Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice CookerThis machine is designed to give baseline service in a rice cooker. It uses a designand technology over 15+ years old.For the amount of money being charged you might want to consider getting a machine that at least has a retractable cord.
On the plus side - the pan heats well and is teflon coated; does white long grain and Japanese medium and short grain very well.
Be aware that the water markings on the interior of the pan correspond to cooking Japanese rice which uses a different ratio of rice to water than other varieties such as, wehani or short grain brown.
This machine has to be played with to do shorter grain varieties of brown. It can handle long grain brown fine.
I would make the suggestion of looking at (all) the rice cookers there and find one that has the following things for the money:
1) stainless steel pan or aluminium pan lined with teflon; 2) retractable cord; 3) warming function;
An on/off switch is NOT standard on an Asian rice cooker. It is due to the fact that in Japan and Australia there is an on/off switch right in the wall plug area. The manufacturers did not take into account that Americans with their different outlet styles would be rice junkies (silly them).
Do not cook anything less than a cup or try for more than 3 cups.Too little rice cooked comes out a bit odd while too much means your pot lid will pop up due to too much steam.
Oh yeah, that's another thing - the lid can make noise due to the steam lifting it during the cooking process (bubbling pot lid kind of stuff). It is not dangerous so don't freak from the noise.
This machine is fine for the dorm or home. But do examine the cost of the machine, the amount of rice you eat and the cost of the machine to features.
This machine is good but it is not great.

Zojirushi NP-HTC18 Induction Heating 10-Cup Pressure Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NP-HTC18 Induction Heating 10-Cup Pressure Rice Cooker and WarmerFirst off I know this rice cooker is super expensive. Why the heck does a rice cooker cost this much? But this isn't even the most expensive, there's a rice cooker that's $2000 in Japan, that's the Bently or Rolls Royce of rice cookers. This one is the Lexus of rice cookers.

The main selling point for this one is that it has induction cooking and pressure cooking. I'm assuming that if you are looking at this machine, you are probably Asian and eat rice everyday. Does this machine make the rice so much better that it's worth the price, not really. Not for it to be worth this much but if you like your rice to be perfectly moist, this does a great job. I'm comparing this rice cooker to my old Tiger which is just a standard rice cooker. This one is all computer controlled and you just can't mess up the rice.

The main reason to get this rice cooker over a cheaper brand is that you want to eat brown rice. Now to be perfectly clear the brown rice is a lot softer but it is not the consistency of white rice. I was reading some reviews and people say they got the brown rice to have the same consistency as white rice. It's softer by far but the brown rice still has the brown cover on it so it is still harder than white rice but a lot softer. This pressure cooker version even makes it softer than just the induction model. I have both. I bought the induction only model and gave it to my mom and now I have this one.

I have no idea if the GABA feature really works but might as well use it, can't hurt.

This machine is made in Japan, not China. Some of the cheaper Zojirushi rice cookers are made in China now.

Zojirushi NSRNC-18A Automatic Rice Cooker and Warmer with Floral Imprint Review

Zojirushi NSRNC-18A Automatic Rice Cooker and Warmer with Floral ImprintGrowing up in an Asian family, we weren't about to mess around with cheap crumby rice cookers. The Zojirushi 10 cups through the years have kept me well fed for 25 years. If you treat it well (i.e. no metal on the nonstick), they'll last forever. If you don't eat rice every day or don't have a large family, this unit might be overkill. You may think about a 4 or 5 cup. You can, of course, buy this one too. My mom owns 3 rice cookers. If you ever go to an Asian food market, you'll see that practically every rice cooker comes in floral print. I don't trust a rice cooker without flowers on the side. =)
PRO:
Easy perfect rice every time
Can feed a small army
Comes with everything except rice and water
Will last forever with a little care
Floral print
CON:
Not for people living alone
You need to know how to make rice
Kinda pricy, but worth it if you eat a lot of rice

Zojirushi NS-PC10 Electric 5-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-PC10 Electric 5-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerInitial purchase around November of 2003:In my house, we mainly eat brown rice & I was concerned that the cooker handle this since rice cookers seem to be designed with white rice in mind.I also wanted to be able to start it in the morning and come back after work and find it perfectly cooked and still hot.I'm happy to report that this cooker performs perfectly at both tasks. For my brown rice, I find that I need a little extra water (ie, fill it a little over the line instead of at the line) but this is a minor quibble.Other than that, it's very easy to use, the measuring marks for water & the measuring cup for rice make it unexpectadely easy to measure the desired amount of rice.I have also used this with great success with more exotic rices incdluding wild rice, black rice and red rice from Butan (or somewhere around there, I got it at Whole Foods)

Update 10/24/04: After almost a year of use, I still love this rice cooker and recently used it to cook barley very successfully (but you have to measure the water & barley yourself, don't use the rice measurements that are pre-labeled on the cooker as the water to grain ratio is different for barley than rice).

Also, I've abused it by pouring rice into the heating compartment of the unit itself and it still works!I simply forgot to put the rice pot in the unit and poured in the rice without it.By the time I realized my error some had gotten into the innards, where it still lives some months later.Other than the fact that I can hear it, the cooker continues to work flawlessly

Update 8/22/2006.Still working flawlessly, even though there is still rice in the innards due to my carelessness.

Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & Warmer Review

Zojirushi NHS-18 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer & WarmerI love my rice cooker and use it several times a week! But you need to wash your rice thoroughly before cooking. This will help with the "spitting water" problem the cooker has.
I enjoy using the steamer for kale, broccoli, cauliflower, or carrots. The only trick is learning when to put the veggies in while the rice is cooking so that the veggies don't overcook.
My brown rice tends to clump and stick on the bottom, even when the rice is washed. That's one problem that keeps me from rating this as a 5 star machine. The other problem is that the instruction booklet is poorly done.Brown rice needs to soak for 30 minutes before starting to cook.

Zojirushi NS-RNC10 Automatic 5.5-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-RNC10 Automatic 5.5-Cup Rice Cooker and WarmerThe Zojirushi cooker (both our old and this new one) does a splendid job cooking white and brown rice to the right consistency if properly prepared. The stay warm feature is great! We can cook a full pot of rice and leave it in the cooker for a couple of days and it stays warm and fresh.[Of course, you need to be careful to use common sense precautions to make sure you don't cause an environment where bacteria breed (i.e., like using unclean serving utensils).]The price may seem a little steep, but since we will use it nearly every day for years (like to old one), it's well worth the price.

We had used a 10 cup Zojirushi rice cooker/warmer for about four years until I damaged the nonstick liner by rinsing rice in it (oops!).When I contacted the company to see about getting a replacement liner, I was told it was $50 plus shipping! After an internet search, I found this 5.5 cup Zojirushi for a nominal amount more money.

We eat a lot of rice - almost daily, but honestly, a 5.5 cup cooker is just the right size for a family of 4 to 6.(We had never made 10 full cups of uncooked rice in the old cooker.)My mom's the connoisseur of rice brands - her rice always comes out perfect each time. Also over the many years she's cooked rice - what use to take some time and constant watching on the stove to get the perfect rice, the cooker/warmer does very efficiently without the worry of burning the rice.

As additional info for those who don't cook much rice, we use to cook white rice but now we cook brown rice.Took getting use to the switch to brown rice, but now we prefer it.We soak the brown rice for about 1/2 to 2 hours in water before cooking it and add a little more water than for white rice.(I believe the recipe that comes with the cooker says this.)It's not as difficult as I'm probably making it out. And, finally, you want to make sure you don't use metal utensils, abrasive cleaners, or abrasive scouring pads in the non-stick liner (or wash your rice in it!) to prolong its life.

Zojirushi NP-GBC05 3-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer with Induction Heating SystemI recently purchased this product from an Amazon merchant and love it! Since I've started incorporating more whole grains into my diet, and being a rice-lover, this item appealed to me from all I'd read, and the GABA rice setting is what really sold me. I've successfully used it to cook Lundberg short grain brown rice on the GABA setting, hulled barley on the GABA setting, organic millet, and whole oats on the GABA setting. There aren't instructions that specifically direct you as to how to cook these particular grains using this product, and the barley I cooked needs to have the amount of water I used the first time tweaked for perfection, but I'm really excited about having the use of this rice cooker for other whole grains. I intend to try whole buckwheat next. One thing that is very nice about using this gadget is that there is no wasting of water lost to steam from over-boiling in order to thoroughly cook these grains. I highly recommend this product for people, like me, who dedicate a large portion of their dietary needs to whole grain consumption... just experiment with the amount of water until you get it just the way you like it, and remember that less water than you'd ordinarily use will probably work with this machine. You just add the grains and water, set it appropriately, and let it do its thing! It shuts itself off automatically at the end of its cooking cycle, and keeps the grains warm, moist and unburnt, until you're ready to eat them.

Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Micom 3-Cup Electric Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Micom 3-Cup Electric Rice Cooker and WarmerI did a lot of research prior to choosing the Zojirushi rice cooker and luckily for me by the time I was ready to purchase the company had come out with this model NS-VGC05 which is very compact and perfect for one person or even two.It does an amazing job of cooking the rice to perfection. The instructions were easy to follow especially for being a novice.I am anxious to try the different settings for different rices and cakes.I called the company to find out about the built in clock. The instructions did not explain whether you have to have the unit plugged in to recharge the clock. The answer is that you do not have to have it plugged in.It is a lithium battery that has a 5-6 year life and then you would call the company directly to have it replaced.
The clean up was really easy again by following the instructions.I highly recommend this product. It is definitely worth the money paid!!!
